Armed Veteran Hog-Ties Burglar With Own Shoelaces Until Police Arrive

Burglar gets a large slice of humble pie after breaking into this home

Part of being a robber is being completely unaware of who could be in the house you choose to break into. That was the case when a robber broke into this home where a two-decade combat veteran was waiting with his two guns, according to Fox 17.

John Scott wasted no time loading up his firearms when he got the call that his brother-in-law’s house had been broken into twice that day. His brother-in-law was on vacation so John headed over to his house and waited. “I’m thinking in the back of my mind, the guy’s already been over there a couple times, ripping him off,” John said, “And I know how much stuff Jeff has inside his house, so I’m thinking, Maybe he’s coming back a third time.”

Sure enough, not 20 minutes after John got there, he spotted the robber coming towards the house in a hat and black gloves. John recalled the robber stepping in the door just to look up and see him holding his .45 pistol. John said the robber stopped with an, “Oh sh$#!” and immediately took off running.

John took off after the thief and with a little struggle and help from a neighbor they caught him and hog-tied him with his own shoelaces. They waited with him until police arrived. John was not subtle in reminding the thief he had picked the wrong house to rob.

Scott Mabrey, 41, was arrested and will have felony robbery and larceny charges. This is not Mabrey’s first time breaking the law (surprise surprise). His criminal rap sheet is long, dates back to 1991 and includes larceny, felony possession of a controlled substance and operating while intoxicated among other things.

This article surely proves the power of a weapon for defense and protection. The size and age difference between the robber and John were quite significant, and this might have had a completely different ending had it not been for John being armed and prepared, and experienced in combat. He was able to make it out of the scuffle from subduing the robber with just scratches, bruises and a bite mark. However if things were to go south, if the robber chose to get violent, John had that instant protection with him and ready to use.

Another gem that gives this story a great ending is the fact that all the stolen items from the house were recovered by authorities after the thief’s arrest. I’m sure a lot of us wish we had an armed brother-in-law like John Scott to protect our house when we go on vacation…
