Police: Teen shot by homeowner during attempted burglary
“Hell – it was the second time I ever shot the gun,” remarked Brent Dooley, the man who shot a father-son duo attempting to break into his Searcy home.
Searcy Police had responded to Dooley’s address for a shots fired call. Dooley admitted to police he had fired off four rounds at the two men who busted through the glass of his front door.
“I told him, I warned him – I said, ‘man I got a gun and I got a kid.’ I said I will shoot – might want to stop,” recounted Dooley. The suspects apparently didn’t stop what they were doing.
Officers say one of the men, 19-year-old James D. Hughes of Judsonia, was shot in the hands and chest. Police say his father, 44-year-old James A. Hughes of Searcy, took him to a local hospital. The son is currently in critical condition with non-life threatening injuries. The father was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated residential burglary.
His bond was set at $75,000.
Everyone has their own idea of how the perfect home defense scenario would play out.
Some people would have no problem firing shots as soon as they heard the door being attacked.
Others might wait considerably longer to determine if it’s a threat that calls for gunshots.
This example happens to be exactly how I would do it.
Brent Dooley told them to stop, explained he had a gun, and then neutralized the threat.
What matters at the end of the day is the good guy took out the bad guys.
