Geraldo Rivera Attacks Vince Vaughn’s Pro-Gun Statements

GERALDO: VINCE VAUGHN SOUNDS LIKE TIMOTHY MCVEIGH DEFENDING GUN RIGHTS

During the Tuesday airing of Fox News’ The Five, Geraldo Rivera said Vince Vaughn’s pro-gun statements reminded him “of Timothy McVeigh and the militias.”

Geraldo mocked Vaughn’s contention that the Founding Fathers hedged in the right to bear arms so we could resist tyranny not only outside our borders, but also within. He facetiously said, “Anyone who thinks they need guns, there is a gun for every man, woman, and child in the country, to protect against the corrupt, and arrogant, and pervasive government” of which Vaughn spoke.

Geraldo later denied that guns are used by law-abiding citizens to stop crimes. He asked fellow host Eric Bolling, “When was the last time you heard of a civilian stopping a crime with a gun?” And when Bolling said, “It happens thousands of times per day,” Geraldo responded by saying, “That’s a legend. You’re watching too much True Detective.”

The number Bolling was looking for was 2,082 defensive gun uses (DGUs) per day. That number comes from Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck’s scholarly work showing a minimum of 760,000 DGUs a year.

Our Take:

The only thing more ridiculous than Geraldo Rivera’s mustache is his opinion on the Second Amendment of the Constitution. I pride those of you who resisted the urge to poke your own eyes out with the nearest sharp object when reading Rivera’s words.

It’s safe to say that actor Vince Vaughn won this head-to-head matchup.

Let’s break down this Fox puppet’s opinion into three ridiculous points that he attempted to make:

1.) Geraldo compares the words of Vaughn to those of Timothy McVeigh. Well played, Geraldo. Way to start off your argument with a wildly inaccurate comparison between a law-abiding citizen and a man who massacred 168 people in the Oklahoma City Bombings. This is how the member of “Fox News’ The Five” reacted to Vaughn’s idea that schools would be safer if teachers were armed (which they would be, no doubt about that).

This is where Geraldo’s word vomit really gets out of control-and at one point-requires his cohost to clean up the mess.

2.) Rivera, the man with apparently all the answers, then claimed that legal gun owners never stop crimes. Here’s the direct quote from the show:

“When was the last time you heard of a civilian stopping a crime with a gun?”

My left eye twitched with confusion after reading this bullshit. If this is journalism, then I’m an anti-gunner.

But Geraldo then received a verbal slap to the face after this comment from his fellow host, Eric Bolling. He responded by saying, “It happens thousands of times per day.”

I’d like to buy this guy a beer for calling out Rivera on national television. With almost 1 million gun-related defensive actions per year in America, it’s easy to side with Bolling’s claim. It sounds like he learned some common sense during his time at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

3.) His final point of ridiculousness came in the form of this, and I quote: “Anyone who thinks they need guns, there is a gun for every man, woman, and child in the country, to protect against the corrupt, and arrogant, and pervasive government.”

Uh oh, here comes the eye twitch again. There’s nothing like bashing our Second Amendment in front of millions of proud Americans. Somebody needs to tell this guy that there’s no limit on the amount of guns in this great nation. We were granted the right by our Founding Fathers to possess and carry guns.

Somebody get this guy a copy of our Constitution, and show him some defensive gun use statistics before throwing him in front of an audience of millions again.
