Good Samaritan With Good Intention Shoots Victim Instead – What Not to Do

Witness Who Fired on Carjackers Sought After Northwest Houston Attack

HOUSTON – A man was carjacked and beaten after he walked out of the Valero gas station late Saturday night in northeast Houston. But someone else who witnessed the crime helped end the attack. As reported by ABC 13 Eyewitness News.

As the suspects began to flee the scene a witness pulled his gun and opened fire on the carjacking suspects but hit the victim in the head. The man attempting to stop the carjacking then picked up his shell casings and fled the scene before police arrived. The carjacking victim was transported to a local hospital and remains in stable condition.

This is a great “what not to do” story, first once a threat has essentially left the scene use of deadly force is rarely justified. Some of the fundamental rules to gun safety are absolutely knowing your target, not placing your finger on the trigger until you are on that target and ready to “destroy” it, and always knowing that you have a safe backdrop behind that target.

These rules were not adhered to in this situation and to make matters even worse, out of fear our would be good samaritan flees the scene. Now we know any shooting situation will be very hectic by nature and it seems up until the point where he flees the good samaritan was acting with good intentions and made some simple mistakes. Once the man flees he has lost the support of law enforcement and will likely be charged with a crime.

The moral of the story in my opinion is, training, we all need to be proficient with not only our firearms but our defensive gun use tactics if we intend to step into any type of situation like this. So get to the range as often as you can, but even more important find a course that will put you in high stress situations with you firearm for training.
