In a significant victory for Second Amendment rights, the House this week voted to let non-violent felons win back their gun rights.
Citing a grandfather who as a college student became a felon for writing a bad rent check, Colorado Republican Rep. Ken Buck said that nonviolent ex-felons should be able to apply to restore their gun rights
This is a huge win for individuals who may not have the cleanest record, but have since straightened themselves out and have become a responsible citizen within society. Colorado Republican Ken Buck effectively restored the rights of non-violent felons, allowing them to access their Second Amendment without needing a personal revision from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Ken Buck told the story of a man who had wrote a bad rent check in college, which ultimately earned him a felony charge.
After years of law-abiding behavior, this citizen still struggled to attain a gun to hunt with. This will no longer be an issue from now on for this ex-criminal.
People make mistakes, especially during those wild and hazy college years. If these “mistakes” are non-violent in nature and the offender stays out of trouble for decades following the incident, I don’t see any reason to prevent these individuals from exercising their Second Amendment right like the rest of us.
