Law goes to next step that would allow CCW holders to legally bypass gun-free zones
A state senate committee in Michigan passed legislation that would give citizens with concealed carry permits the right to bring their weapons in gun-free zones. The law would basically override the laws in gun-free zones for those who attain a CCW or who currently carry concealed.
Its now on its way to Michigan Senate floor to be voted on.
Supporters say “gun-free” zones attract mass shootings and that gunmen will think twice before attacking a public space if they know that someone could be armed, The Detroit News reports.
“We have a constitutional right to defend ourselves, and there’s no exception clause associated with it,” said Republican State Sen. Patrick Colbeck of Canton. “The data clearly shows that we have increased public safety when people are allowed to carry guns.”
“This legislation will allow more citizens the ability to protect themselves and their families in these areas,” Republican State Sen. Mike Green of Mayville told the Oakland Press.
It has its supporters and of course the usual opposers such as Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. One woman said on Michigan Radio,“Whether they’re open carry or conceal carry, I don’t think guns have a place in schools at all,”
Does she know a report by the Crime Prevention Research Center concluded that since 2009, 92% of mass shootings have happened in gun-free zones? I think that report in itself shows the futility of the gun-free zones…
As sad as it is, we are in the day and age where guns are necessary to protect and defend. Good for Michigan for realizing this and being one step closer to implementing it.
