Woman faced with 10 years in prison for unconstitutional gun laws in New Jersey
Mia Higginbotham was in the process of moving from New Jersey to Florida. Ammoland reports she packed her lawfully owned handgun in its original box and locked it in her hard sided luggage. She was extremely cautious, she had read about how to properly transport a weapon when in the process of moving on the TSA website and always declared the firearm at check-in.
It was when she checked in at Liberty International Airport in Elizabeth/Newark that she was arrested for unlawful possession of an unloaded handgun. New Jersey is threatening her with 10 years in State Prison with a minimum mandatory of 3.5 to 5 years with no chance of parole. She is married and has a 5 year old daughter, prison would make her lose her chiropractic license and business, and would force her to miss several vital years of her young daughter’s life.
When she was initially arrested she was faced with a $50,000 bond. She was clearly carrying to transport, she had no ammunition on her and her gun was locked in her suitcase. This whole case is an absolute joke! I cannot imagine how hopeless Mia Higginbotham felt in jail with a 50,000 dollar bond, after knowing her laws and her constitution and having the lieutenant tell her the high bond was for the “severity of the crime.”
She originally bought the gun because she had a stalker and police demanded that she get a conceal permit and gun to protect herself.
This is absolutely enraging and an embarrassment to our country and especially to the state of New Jersey. These laws need to be scrutinized, more people need to stand up and let it be known that this will not be tolerated.
“New Jersey is the shining example of what no state ever wants to become,” Mia’s Defense Lawyer said, “If you want to see what happens, look at Mia’s case. Look at these individuals, what they went through, and thats why we have to keep up that fight, thats why we have to protect that freedom.”
