3 dead, 23 wounded in 21 shootings over unusually violent weekend
City streets turned bloody over the balmy weekend — an earlier spate of violence than in recent years and a bad omen for what could become a long and violent summer.
Three people were killed and 23 others wounded in 21 shooting incidents between Friday and Sunday, officials said. The violence frayed nerves and prompted a promise of beefed-up police presence.
As of Monday night, no one had been charged with letting off shots, which mostly took place in Brooklyn and the Bronx. And while it’s common for bullets to fly as the weather warms up, the disturbing gunplay in early spring is unusual.
In New York City, it’s all but impossible for a law abiding citizen to carry a concealed weapon. For that privilege, one needs to usually be a member of law enforcement or be a seriously powerful and well connected person.
So for the working class folks living in the Bronx and Brooklyn, they’ve been forced to simply “lay low” as a three day murder spree heats up in the streets.
While some may argue that this is simply the byproduct of a gang war in a city famous for them, it truly highlights the disparity between criminals who don’t have any respect for the law and citizens who are just trying to protect themselves.
Notably CCW permit holders in NYC include Harvey Keitel, Howard Stern, and Donald Trump – all incredibly famous and wealthy people.
Outside of them, New York state and New York City in particular have a very draconian policy for the average person trying to protect his or herself from this rampant violence.
And for those that would argue this is simply an (illegal) territory war taking place and “civilians” (non-gang affiliated members) aren’t generally dragged into these sorts of battles – that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Cops say Brown jumped out of a car and shot and killed 33-year-old Dune Janelle Jacobs just a half-block from her home on E. 213th St. and Holland Ave. in Williamsbridge on Dec. 2, officials said.
Investigators believe Brown, a member of the Young Guns street crew, mistook Jacobs for a 23-year-old man who is a member of the Bloods-affiliated Brothers for Another crew.
The fact of the matter is that gun violence, especially in NYC, is predominantly perpetrated by – you guessed it – criminals. Because the average citizen is denied both his and her second amendment rights to carry a firearm – they are at the mercy of the NYPD to respond in a timely manner to an active shooting environment.
That’s arguably impossible.
According to NYC Analytics – the bureau that keeps statistics on all 911 response times for the NYPD – over a half million life threatening emergencies were reported via 911 from 11/18/2013 to 3/23/2015. Average response time to the first arrival of a police officer? Eight minutes and seven seconds.
Ask yourself – in the middle of a gun fight, how long is eight minutes and seven seconds? More importantly, from the arrival of the first patrol car to actual interdiction of aforementioned impromptu gun battle raging in the streets of Brooklyn or the Bronx, how likely do you think two lone NYPD officers are to jump into that fray?

Jacobs was in the middle of packing for her move to Brooklyn so she could be closer to her job at Buffalo Wild Wings in the Atlantic Center mall, family members said. She had just been promoted, her niece said.
Cops heard the shots that hit Jacobs in the foot and head at 12:45 a.m., officials said.
As they raced over, they saw a car speeding away.
The vehicle, a rental car that had not been returned, was found abandoned a short distance away.
It’s a lose-lose scenario for both NYPD officers responding to this spree of gun violence spreading across the five boroughs and innocent civilians caught in the cross hairs. The real question is – when is NYC going to update their antiquated and dangerous CCW policies?
