56 shot, 12 killed in violent Memorial Day weekend in Chicago
At least 56 people were shot over Memorial Day weekend between Friday afternoon and early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
Twelve people, including three shot Monday afternoon, died from their wounds. Twelve others shot between late Monday morning and early Tuesday morning survived their gunshot wounds, bringing the total of non-fatal gunshot victims for the weekend to 44.
Two of the 12 homicide victims were killed Friday night into Saturday morning; our were killed Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning; and three of the victims were killed Sunday night.
We covered last weeks mayhem in Chicago, and this past weekend is more of the same carnage.
We chose this picture to highlight the fact that the violence and shootings are not just restricted to derelict and run down neighborhoods.
Here we have people walking down a clean, middle class looking neighborhood. Minutes later a gang gunfight breaks out; stray bullets flying everywhere.
For too long the innocent hard working people of Chicago have been under siege by bad guys with nothing to fear from their prey.
It is true that Chicago has loosened its gun laws recently, but years and years of anti-gun sentiment has taken its toll.
A massive unarmed populace of legal law abiding citizens, mixed with a huge force of criminals armed with stolen and smuggled guns has created a killing zone out of the city.
What is the answer to solving Chicago’s problem? I don’t think anyone really has an answer.
What we can do, however, is learn from Chicago. We can learn that massive disarmament does not work.
We can use Chicago as an example of what happens when good people don’t have a way to defend themselves, and the bad guys run amok with deadly weapons.
The Police, for as hard as they work, cannot save you when you are staring down the barrel of a thug with bad intentions.
Let’s make sure, as Americans, we never allow another Chicago to happen to one of our American cities.
