An armed robbery attempt in Little Woods ended Monday night (April 27) with the robber being shot with his own gun, New Orleans police said.

Police identified the suspected robber as 21-year-old Travis Stanley. According to preliminary information provided by NOPD, Stanley tried to rob a 25-year-old man around 9:50 p.m. in the 7700 block of Allison Road. The two men struggled, police said, and the 25-year-old managed to wrestle Stanley’s gun away from him.

The man shot Stanley, who was later transported to an area hospital, police said. His condition was not released and police did not immediately say how many times Stanley was shot, or where he was hit.

As a gun owner, I can’t think of anything much worse than being shot with my own gun.

This is why we practice, we drill, we attune ourselves to situational awareness, and we also train to make sure our gun does not become disarmed.

This is another major difference between most criminals with illegal guns, and law abiding gun owners.

Criminals use their gun as an object of fear, usually only ever needing it for that purpose.

They do not train to use it, or care to improve their marksmanship, or practice anything related to actually using the weapon effectively.

Legal gun owners on the other hand actually take the time to hit the range and work on their gun skills; both in safety and for defensive use.

We certainly aren’t suggesting that criminals are easy targets to disarm, after all they are still holding onto a deadly weapon.

However, a two-bit criminal who owns a gun illegally usually doesn’t put the time into gun safety and marksmanship like us legal gun owners.

If gun-control advocates only spent time understanding the real differences between these two types of gun owners, I think they would be less fearful and extreme about guns.
