When she heard her door pried open she quickly ran and got her gun

It was already loaded because of what’s already happened at Smith’s home, near MLK & 56th Street North. Burglar bars guard the window where thieves broke in and stole cash once before.
Since then, Smith has beefed up her alarm system and her fiancé added the gun – cocked and ready. “He was coming towards me. You know, like he was going to do something to me, harm me, and I was going to get him before he got me,” she said. The bullets didn’t hit the burglars but got them out of her house.
Carmen Smith said this defensive gun use was her first time ever shooting a gun. Her gunshots shattered a picture of her family in her house, went through the front door and made contact with the (fortunately) abandoned house across the street.
She didn’t want to actually hurt anyone, “I’m not trying to kill nobody’s child. I don’t want that pain on me, you know? And I don’t want it on nobody else, but if they coming after me, then I have to do what I have to do; and it’s just that simple,”
She also expressed desire to go to the gun range and practice her shooting.
Unfortunately, instances like this wake people up to predators’ intentions that are so ruthless they’re almost animalistic. She realized she was just a small obstacle in these robbers’ path to getting what they wanted, and her life did not matter in that moment to them.
She probably had hoped she wouldn’t ever have to use the gun her fiancé bought for the home after a previous robbery. However, it most likely saved her from injury or even death. Many people are just like this, they are not particularly interested in hunting or shooting, but they carry a firearm in case of an emergency. Many times they realize taking that step to getting armed saved their life.
Every citizen could use a class that teaches gun safety, and it would be so beneficial for anyone who owns a firearms permit to take it on the range and practice becoming comfortable with shooting and aim. She is lucky that there weren’t innocent people elsewhere in her line of fire, and that the house she hit was abandoned. Classes teach you to be aware and in control of every single bullet that exits your gun.
Any random person is in danger of become a victim of a crime, make the choice to refuse to be a victim like this woman. Always defend and carry.
