NEW YORK (WABC) — The suspect in the the brutal murder of a homeless shelter director in the Bronx appeared in court Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the victim, 36-year-old Ana Charle, was kidnapped, stripped down naked, almost raped and then shot dead in the back in broad daylight by a man she once tried to help.

West Spruill, 39, is accused of forcing her at gunpoint into her SUV near the Project Renewal Shelter in the Wakefield section, where he sexually assaulted her. She managed to escapethe vehicle, but authorities say Spruill chased her and shot her three times.

Spruill previously served 11 years in prison for attempted murder and assault. He had moved out of the shelter in january.

Well, this was in NYC, so I guess we can ask the question what ways could she have defended herself? Clearly not with a gun as that is not allowed in NYC.

If only Ana had the option to carry a firearm for her protection, there is a very good chance she would be alive today.

This man, who she took care of for almost 7 months by providing him a shelter and food, came upon her with a gun and threatened her life.

He forced her to remove all her clothes so he could sexually assault her. All she could do was comply with his vile demands. Then run away when an opening happened.

She ran the streets of NY naked screaming for help. None helped her.

When West Spruill caught up to her he put three bullets into her at close range, ending her life.

She was later found completely naked and with bullets in her head and chest.

She understood the potential danger of this man and others she tried to help. She parked her car away from the shelter as a way to protect herself from being caught off guard from one of these men.

Had she the opportunity to protect herself with a gun, she may have felt a bit more safer and a bit more bolder when it came to dealing with these scum.
