Another bill was filed to amend laws prohibiting the open carry of firearms in Florida
Florida, nicknamed the “Gunshine State” due to their favorable gun laws and enthusiastic gun culture, is once again attempting to repeal the state’s archaic laws on open carry.
State Rep. Matt Gaetz is leading the latest attempt to pass an “open carry” gun law in Florida.
The Shalimar Republican filed HB 163 on Monday; in part, the bill would allow a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm or weapon to “also openly carry such firearm or weapon.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz posted on Facebook in July and called Florida “an outlier” referencing it’s laws that still prohibit open carry. He said Texas made the change to open carry and now Florida needs to follow and encouraged people to share his status if they believe in the 2nd Amendment.
Florida gun owners can legally open carry if they are in the process, on their way to hunt, fish, and camp. This bill would make changes allowing for open carry “for purposes of lawful self-defense” for a firearm, nonlethal stun gun, dart-firing stun gun, an electric weapon (including chemical spray), or any other device designed for defensive purposes.
Rep. Matt Gaetz is working towards taking the Senate seat held by his father and former Senate President Don Gaetz.
It’s good to see representatives and others still advocating for elements of the Second Amendment, because it is a constant give-and-take battle. America has laws passed and then amended all the time on gun control and rights, so it’s up to those who support our right to bear arms to fight and continue pushing for our Second Amendment.
Florida is huge on gun rights, they also have increasing numbers of defensive gun use, and hopefully many will catch on that good people with guns prevent and defend crime. Along with having the highest number of gun owners in America, Florida just keeps on getting points for role-model state…
