The Push For National Universal Background Check Is Back

Anti-Gun “Universal” Background Check Bill Reintroduced

Rep. Mike Thompson Predicts Congress Will Pass Gun Background Check Legislation

Press Release From Mike Thompson (D-Calif.)

A coalition of U.S. House members today introduced H.R. 1217, the bipartisan King-Thompson background check legislation, officially known as the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2015.

“This anti-criminal, pro-Second Amendment bill will help keep spouses, kids and communities safe by preventing dangerous people from getting guns,” said Mike Thompson.

“Background checks are the first line of defense in our efforts to keep guns from criminals, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill, and Congress should fortify that first line of defense by passing our bipartisan bill to close the system’s loopholes.”

“There is no single law that can put an end to mass shootings or gun violence, but there are certainly proactive steps we can take to keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill.

Anti-gun U.S. Representatives Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), have introduced new “universal” background check legislation in the form of H.R. 1217.

This legislation is similar to the failed Obama and Bloomberg-backed legislation from last congress that attempted to create a “universal” background check system that would criminalize the private transfer of a firearm between life-long friends and even family members.

Obviously this bill is different in some ways as to give it a fighting chance, but a bad bill is still a bad bill. Despite all the flagrant deception in this press release, there is some truth to be found here.

It is very true that there is no single law that can put an end to mass shootings or gun violence; so stop trying! Stop trying to saddle law abiding citizens with laws that burden our ability to exercise our Second Amendment rights.

Whether these measures be wait times, background checks, magazine limitations, permit requirements, mandatory training courses etc etc, all of these things do in fact infringe on our right to bear arms.

Can you imagine if they tried to impose any one of these things on the right to vote? Or the First Amendment? “Before you are allowed to vote you need to pay to take a class about voting, and then pay to get a permit that you to vote.”

People would be screaming disenfranchisement from the tallest buildings and highest peaks in this country. So why is it OK to do this to gun owners and the Second Amendment?

Furthermore, the entire idea of background checks is utterly flawed. As we have seen time and time again, criminals do not go to the store to buy their guns. They obtain them illegally or through straw purchases, two things background checks have zero impact on.

I suspect this bill will die in flames, but good on them for reminding us that their attempt to disarm us is ever in the forefront of their minds.
