KXXV – News 25

FREESTONE COUNTY – The Freestone County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a home invasion near Teague early Monday morning that left a suspected robber dead and the resident in critical condition. Two teens are also in custody.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. at a private home off Highway 84, west of Teague.

Initial reports indicate three teens forced their way into the home, and at least one of them was armed.

The homeowner was shot in the stomach. He was also armed and returned fire at the robbers, shooting one of the suspects, who then fled.

19-year-old Joshua Mulkey was found dead just outside the home. Two 18-year-olds, O’Jarion McClenon and Lawson Abram, were taken into custody after being found nearby. They are in the Freestone County Jail each facing a count of aggravated robbery.

The homeowner, identified as 45-year-old Doug Hurst, was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest in Waco in critical condition.

Our prayers go out to Doug Hurst who is still in critical condition at this moment. We hope Doug makes a full recovery and can return home soon. Aside from the physical injuries he will have to overcome, these three teenage thugs will also no doubt bring Doug a lot of headaches in the way of investigations and trials, and people chiding him for killing a teenager.

Already in the comments of the news report, friends and family members are coming to the “aid” of deceased thug Joshua Mulkey. Although some comments have been removed, the usual “he was a good kid who just made a bad choice and didn’t deserve to die” stuff is coming out.

There are some people even vilifying the homeowner already, accusing him of murdering this “good boy.” Obviously, this is nonsense and we hope that Mr. Hurst will have no doubts about the fact that he did the right thing.

Every American has the right to defend themselves and their home. When these three punks came crashing into his home he grabbed his firearm and defended himself. One of these home invaders had gun and fired at Mr. Hurst who took a bullet in the stomach during the exchange.

In the end the homeowner managed to shoot and kill one of the invaders, and the other two fled like the roaches they are; later to be picked up by police. The two who got away may face murder charges in the death of their friend Joshua Mulkey, and attempted murder on Doug Hurst.

For all of those who are praising the victim or trying to make excuses for his decision, save your breath. He was a bad guy getting caught doing a bad thing and paid the ultimate price for it. He knew the risk and did it anyway. You have every right to mourn the loss if he was a friend or family member, but don’t try to insult the rest of us by pretending he was a good guy. He was a menace to society and thanks to Mr. Hurst – he won’t be bothering anyone again.
