According to reports from the Bullhead City Police Department and statements from witnesses in the neighborhood in the 1800 block of Surf and Sand Drive, 60-year-old Buff Kutschat shot Austin Thomas Passons once in the stomach after Passons refused to leave the property.
Emily Fromelt, public information officer for the Bullhead City Police Department, said witnesses told police that Passons showed up at the residence uninvited around noon Monday and allegedly tried to provoke a fight with Forrest Kutschat, Buff Kutschat’s adult son. At some point, the elder Kutschat pointed a gun at Passons and told him to leave.
Instead, Passons reportedly took a step toward Buff Kutschat in an aggressive manner and Kutschat fired a single shot, striking Passons in the abdomen. Passons was taken to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City, where he was pronounced dead.
There is a popular saying among gun owners that answers the question as to why they own or carry a gun. “Because I am too young to die, and too old to take a beating.”
Absolutely brilliant and 100% true. The gun is the greatest equalizer in the history of mankind.
It is unfortunate that many young people often feel that they are invincible and will live forever.
This incident seems to be an example of these two ways of thinking colliding, and ending in deadly consequences.
Here we have a known neighborhood trouble maker coming onto another mans property to start a physical altercation.
When asked to leave he refused, even when a gun was pointed at him. Thinking of his own invincibility, he moved aggressively towards his target and then soon realized his mistake.
What was the elderly man to do? Certainly he is too old to fight this young man with his fists, and he is too old to take a severe beating.
He was left with one choice, and that was to defend his life by using his gun.
This is why we own firearms. This is why we carry.
