Defenseless Man Unable To Protect Himself Or Baby

Robbers held a gun to a Southern Indiana man’s head in front of his 1-year-old daughter.

They got away with his money, but not for long.  The men are now behind bars at the Floyd County jail.

The crime happened on Culbertson Avenue in New Albany. Police arrested 19-year-old John Campbell and William Seay, as well as an unnamed teenager.

Brian Maggard was pulling into the back parking lot of his apartment complex early Monday morning.

Police say the thieves were lurking nearby.

“They was right over here by this fence and they was ducked down, when I pulled up I didn’t even see them or nothing,” said Brian Maggard.

Maggard said when he got out of his car to open the back door and grab his 1-year-old daughter, the two men and teenager approached him and demanded his money.

At first he thought it was a joke, but quickly realized the men were not his friend. He had never seen them before.

“They cocked the gun after I told them I had my daughter with me, and then that is when I told him, “Dude, really, I got my year old daughter with me,” and he was like, ‘Yeah give us the money,'” said Maggard.

Maggard was surrounded and staring down the barrel of a gun.  “It was like a foot and a half, two feet, that is about where I saw the gun,” said Maggard.

“They told me, ‘You give us the money, you walk away free.'” He gave them his rent and grocery money.

“I was like,”Here, that is all I got,” and they was like, ‘I hear change, give me your change.'” Maggard says the men kept inching closer.

“I was just kind of in shock, like is this really about to happen? I didn’t know what to do, the only thing I thought about was her and if they got any closer, I was going to grab that gun and try to fight them or something, just try to keep them away from her,” said Maggard

If you follow the link and watch the video, you will understand why I use the term “man” loosely for Brian Maggard. Nonetheless, he found himself in a situation where he was utterly unable to defend himself or his one year old daughter.

The lesson here for Brian is that it doesn’t matter if you are with a baby, there are people in this world who will do very cruel and terrible things for a few bucks; and babies will not stop them.

As a parent he is responsible for protecting and taking care of his child. To do so effectively, he needs to be better prepared to defend himself.

This story ended well, with the robbers being caught and the money returned (presumably) to Brian; and nobody was hurt.

However, could have gone really bad for him and his daughter.

Even if he had a legal firearm on him perhaps this would have played out the same, where he simply handed over the money and the bad guys left. Yet, had the situation been escalated Brian would have been far better prepared to defend his life and the life of his daughter.

It doesn’t look like they live in the best of neighborhoods either. We hope Brian learns from this incident and examines his legal right to own and carry a firearm. Next time he may not be so lucky.
