Airport Open Carry Stunt Leads to Predictable Gun Ban Legislation

Jim Cooley walked into the world’s busiest airport with an AR-15 fitted with a drum magazine slung across his chest last week, and has the temerity to feign offense when law enforcement reasonably took an interest in him.

As a direct result of Cooley’s stunt, Georgia Democrat Hank Johnson has now proposed a federal law to ban both open and concealed carry in airports.

And this is the problem when we take action or make a stand not truly based on our freedoms but rather simply to get attention. That’s when we get ‘attention’ and all the wrong kind. Stories like this really get to me because we are facing an uphill battle when it comes to the rights that we were granted in our Constitution. These rights are being infringed upon on a daily basis and when you perform silly little stunts like this to get attention you give endless ammunition to the very people we are battling against.

Police officers and TSA officers are not the people making policy but they are the ones that end up having to deal with stupid nut jobs like this guy. In most cases the officers that are forced to deal with guys like this are people just like us who believe in our freedoms and our rights as much as any American. We have to think things through and ask ourselves: “how can I go about inciting change?” the simple answer is, get involved in the issue, and learn what will help as far as who we support in Washington, what events we can attend to make a difference, and what causes we can support in our local communities.

I urge anyone who thinks that performing these kinds of attention grabbing stunts to look closely at Jim Cooley’s actions and the result of these actions and ask yourself two questions: Do you really want to continue to give our enemies more ammunition to use against us? Do you want to see our civil liberties not only upheld but expanded on?

The answers to these questions should guide your actions in the right direction. If we continue to walk around like lunatics in an effort to grab attention we can all collectively kiss our right to keep and bare arms goodbye.

Just because we CAN do something doesn’t mean we SHOULD!
