GREENSBORO — A woman was robbed of her own gun while sitting in a convenience store parking lot this morning.

The victim was sitting in her vehicle at the Kangaroo Express at 3225 Pleasant Garden Road about 3:30 a.m. when a man walked up to her car, according to police.

The man began talking to her when he reached into her car and grabbed a handgun that was sitting on the center console of the car, police said.

The man pointed the handgun at the woman and ordered her to drive away, according to police. The woman drove off, then called law enforcement.

This, folks, is why you should not carry off-body.

We understand that sometimes, by law, you cannot carry your weapon on you when driving. However, you should never ever leave your gun out in plain site for someone to see; or worse – grab.

Being in possession of a firearm is a serious responsibility, and carrying or transporting that firearm needs to be done also in a very responsible fashion.

This women failed to do so and could have gotten killed because of it.

According to my quick research, unless in possession of a concealed handgun license, a person MUST carry the firearm in plain sight within the car. So I think the criticism of how she was transporting the firearm is off-base.

Allowing someone to approach and reach into her car, yes that should be addressed. But let’s not castigate someone for following the law. Maybe focus on the need to change the law instead.

She didn’t have any situation awareness. She should have been more alert at 3:30am since she was alone, barely rolling her window down and with her hand on the gun while she was talking to him!
