DC Doesn’t Like Residents Carrying Guns
Free Beacon – Stephen Gutowski
The District of Columbia continues to issue gun carry permits at a slow pace, handing out only 16 since Federal Judge Frederick Scullin, Jr., declared the city’s ban on gun carry unconstitutional last July.
The ruling forced D.C. to issue gun carry permits, but unlike the majority of states the District decided to implement a “may issue” law which requires applicants have a “good reason” to carry a firearm.
The law leaves the final decision on who gets a permit up to Chief of Police Cathy Lanier, and requires $110 in application fees, 18 hours of firearms training, and a 90-day waiting period.
The law, among the most restrictive in the nation, has drawn repeated criticism from gun rights groups.
What is it about DC that makes the government and law enforcement so against allowing residents to carry firearms? It seems strange that DC is filled with guns from all the bodyguards, private security, law enforcement, and even military – yet guns are then dangerous in the hands of citizens?
One might get the impression that the seat of our government doesn’t believe in the Constitution or the rights it grants American Citizens. Wouldn’t it be nice if the city of our government was a shining example of what America is meant to stand for instead of the oppressive city that it is?
